How the pub quiz generator works

Start by naming your quiz and choosing how many rounds you want and how many questions go in each round. Then set up each round: give it a name, pick a category (or keep it mixed), choose a difficulty, and decide which question types you want.

Hit Generate and the tool pulls questions from our community database, with the correct answer and a short explanation attached to every one. From there you are in full control: swap any question for a new one, reorder or delete questions, rename rounds, and add your own custom questions. If you would rather write everything yourself, use the start from scratch mode and build your rounds manually.

What is in the printable pack

The export is built for running a real quiz night, so you get two printouts:

The host sheet lists every round and every question with the answer in bold directly underneath, plus a short explanation where available. You read from this one sheet all night and settle disputes on the spot.

The team answer sheets have one section per round with numbered blank lines that match your question counts, the quiz title, and a team name line. Print one set per team, hand them out, and collect them after each round for marking.

Both use your browser's print dialog, so you can print straight to paper or save them as a PDF. There is also a copy as text button if you prefer to paste the quiz into a document or message.

Tips for hosting a good quiz night

A few things that make a quiz night run smoothly:

Mix your difficulties. A round where everyone scores zero is no fun, and neither is a round where everyone scores ten. Easy openers and one or two hard questions per round keep all the teams in it.

Read each question twice, then move on. Give teams a set time per round and collect the answer sheets before you read the answers, so nobody can fill in blanks late.

Have a tie-breaker ready. A numeric question where the closest guess wins works well, for example a year, a distance, or a population.

Mark between rounds and keep a running scoreboard. Announcing standings after each round keeps the room engaged.

Where the questions come from

Every question in the generator comes from the QuizQuestions.org community database. Questions are submitted by quiz fans and reviewed by a human moderator before they are approved, and each one carries its correct answer and, in most cases, a short explanation. That explanation is what lets you settle the inevitable table dispute with more than just "because the sheet says so".

If a category does not have enough approved questions for the round you asked for, the tool tells you instead of padding the round with off-topic filler. You can then lower the count, widen the difficulty, or add your own questions to fill the gap.

Pub quiz generator FAQs

Is the pub quiz generator free?

Yes. Generating, editing, printing, and copying your quiz is completely free, and you can use the quiz for personal or commercial events, including a paid entry pub quiz night.

Do I need an account to build a quiz?

No signup is needed. Your in-progress quiz is saved automatically in your browser's local storage, so you can close the tab and come back to it on the same device.

Can I print the quiz?

Yes. You get two printouts: a host sheet with every question, the answer in bold, and a short explanation, and team answer sheets with numbered blank lines for each round. Both open in your browser's print dialog, so you can print to paper or save as a PDF.

How many rounds should a pub quiz have?

Most pub quizzes run 4 to 6 rounds of 10 questions, which takes roughly 90 minutes to two hours with marking. The generator defaults to 5 rounds of 10, and you can set 1 to 10 rounds with 5 to 20 questions each.

Can I add my own questions?

Yes. You can add custom questions to any round, swap out any generated question, reorder or delete questions, rename rounds, and add extra rounds. There is also a start from scratch mode where you write the whole quiz yourself.

Where do the questions come from?

From the QuizQuestions.org community database. Questions are submitted by users and approved by a human moderator, and each comes with its correct answer and usually a short explanation you can read out when teams dispute an answer.

What if I do not like a question?

Use the swap button next to it. The tool draws a replacement that matches the round's category, difficulty, and type settings, and it will not repeat a question already used elsewhere in your quiz.
